FUORI. Quadriennale d’arte 2020

2019-2021
Palazzo delle Esposizioni, Rome

The Quadriennale d’arte 2020 is the major exhibition of contemporary Italian art that occupy the more than 4000 square meters of exhibition space of the Palazzo delle Esposizioni, in the heart of Rome. Following a precise critical line, about forty artists have been invited to present new or little explored avenues of research. The result of more than two years of study, meetings, portfolio viewings, studio visits, exhibition and museum scoutings, and investigations of the Institution’s own archive and history, the Quadriennale d’arte 2020 proposes an innovative intergenerational and multidisciplinary path.
The exhibition aims to provide a rereading of Italian art from the 1960s until today, adding complexity to the canonical narratives of what has been produced in the last sixty years. Artists who have worked in different disciplinary fields such as dance, music, theater, film, fashion, architecture and design have often been overlooked or not included in the history of
Italian art. The exhibition recognizes their contribution and acknowledges the interest of the generations of younger artists in wanting to deal with broader imaginaries than those traditionally designated by the art system. These are lines of research that are sometimes discontinuous or that have re-emerged after years, even unconsciously, and that enrich the narrative of the art of the past and fortify the reading of that produced in the present. The exhibition becomes a unique opportunity to return an unprecedented panorama of Italian art to visitors, who will be able to confront each artist’s imaginaries in depth.
