In the early morning of January 15, 1968, the Belice valley in Sicily experienced an earthquake that left more than 500 people dead and villages throughout the valley were destroyed.
Belice was one of the poorest areas in Italy and even before the earthquake there were strong protests in the area. The earthquake did not change this situation, and on January 15, 1970 a vigil was called in front of the ruins of the village of Gibellina where some of the most important Italian writers and artists were present, and which was the beginning of a new era. After years of living in barracks, the village was rebuilt fifteen kilometers from its original site.
Nuova Gibellina was the site of one of the most important theater festivals of the 1990s. Nicolò Stabile learned his trade there and then lived for many years in Brussels and Rome working as a producer and programmer. In 2010 he decided to return and take care of his village, Cretto and his island. Through the story of his life we ask ourselves: What does it mean today to remember, to rebuild or to be reborn? How does the geography where we live define us? What can the theater do today? What can the Mediterranean do today? Sicily is the metaphor of southern Europe, of an invisible crack, of an in-between territory, of a way of life that does not quite fit in because perhaps it does not want to. This island was the gateway to many different ideas and civilizations. An island often hospitable but distrustful, in the center of the sea but on the margins of everything. If an idea of Europe still exists, perhaps it has to start with Sicily.
